Around 1576 Caravaggio's father died of the plague, leaving his family in great economical difficulty. Around the age of 13, Caravaggio began apprenticeship with the milanese painter Simone Peterzano. Once finished he left Milan permanently and moved to Rome in search of glory. He started working for the painter Cavalier D'Arpino, but then decided to work for himself. In the year 1600, thanks to Prince Giustiniani, Caravaggio obtained his first commission: the decoration of the Contarelli Chapel in the church of San Luigi dei Francesi, in which he painted three canvases on the life of Saint Matthew. We will also visit the church of Sant'Agostino, in which we will admire the "Madonna dei Pellegrini", and the church of Santa Maria del Popolo, with its famous Cerasi Chapel in which we will find two Caravaggio paintings. We will discover the Campo Marzio district, following the life and works of Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio. The visit include : the church of San Luigi dei Francesi, and its three Caravaggio paintings about Saint Matthew's life; the church of Sant'Agostino and the "Madonna di Loreto"; the church of Santa Maria del Popolo and the Cerasi Chapel.
